Shawn L. Barat
A native of Florida, Shawn Barat received the degrees Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting from the University of Florida. Mr. Barat has taught band in public schools and universities in Florida for 20 years, including successful positions at Ocala-Forest High School, Winter Haven High School, and most recently as Adjunct Professor of Music and Director of Concert Band and Osprey Pep Band at The University of North Florida.
In 2013, Mr. Barat completed a 7-year tenure as Director of Bands at Douglas Anderson (DA) School of the Arts in Jacksonville. His teaching responsibilities at DA included the direction of the Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble and Chamber Ensembles, as well as teaching Advanced Placement Music Theory. Under Mr. Barat's direction, all ensembles consistently received Superior ratings at district and state level events. In addition, the DA Wind Symphony performed at the 2008 NAfME National Biennial In-Service Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the 2009 Florida Music Educators' Association Professional Development Conference in Tampa, the 2011 Music for All National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana, and the prestigious Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago in December of 2011. During Mr. Barat's time at DA, the Music Department was twice recognized as the National GRAMMY Signature School by the GRAMMY Foundation, first in 2010 and again in 2012.
Mr. Barat started a new chapter in his career as Director of Bands at Buchholz High School in Gainesville in the Spring of 2015, returning "home" to a band program he spent countless hours working with during his time as a student at the University of Florida. At Buchholz, Mr. Barat directs the "Golden Regiment" Marching Band, Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, BHS Jazz Band, and teaches Advanced Placement Music Theory. In addition, he continues to be an active clinician and adjudicator for middle and high school bands throughout Florida, and is an involved member of several music organizations. He is currently the chairman of the Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA) Ethics Committee, as well as chairman for FBA District 4. He has served as guest conductor for All-State and All-County Bands, including the FBA All-State High School Honor Band and the FBA 9-Star Honor Band.
Mr. Barat's professional affiliations include the National Association for Music Education, the Florida Bandmasters Association, the National Band Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and Pi Kappa Lambda Music Honor Society. Mr. Barat was elected to the Omega Chapter of Phi Beta Mu Bandmasters Fraternity in 2006, and was inducted into the prestigious American Bandmasters Association in 2014. He resides in Gainesville with his wife Alison, an ESE teacher in the Alachua County schools, and daughters Emerson, nine, and Norah, seven.
